What was most impressive, then, about A Moon Shaped Pool was that despite having such a full, respected body of work, Radiohead clearly continued to hone their craft. It’s hard to argue that that even the slinky, in-the-moment grooves of The King of Limbs have been underpraised. Plus, for all the business-model significance of the surprise, pay-what-you-want approach to 2007’s In Rainbows, the music itself was as direct, euphoric, and meticulous as any in Radiohead’s catalogue. But then again, almost as much has been said about 2000’s electronics-embracing Kid A, its 2001 kindred spirit Amnesiac, and 2003’s Bush-baiting consolidation move Hail to the Thief. Radiohead’s ascent from the relatively inauspicious college-rock poses of their major-label debut, 1993’s Pablo Honey, to the swelling grandeur of 1995’s The Bends, and on through the textural subtlety of 1997 masterpiece OK Computer has been well documented by a rapturous music press. In fact, Yorke, Greenwood, and Selway, along with guitarist Ed O’Brien and Greenwood’s brother Colin on bass, have been doing some variation of this since attending school together in the mid-’80s. But on A Moon Shaped Pool, that sense of the half-understood sublime, conveyed most powerfully through Yorke’s fragile upper register and foreboding keys, remained undimmed. In the years before that, Yorke has brooded as a glitchy electronic solo artist when not shaking his ponytail as a member of the rhythm-centered Atoms for Peace supergroup multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood has roamed from scoring Paul Thomas Anderson’s film Inherent Vice to recording with traditional musicians in India and drummer Phil Selway has devised his own singer/songwriter miniatures. quintet’s more recent activity has been just as fascinating: Their ninth studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool, was released in 2016. Villegas announced the decision only a few days after receiving the letter from UN Watch, though he did not mention anything about Muftah.Ī few days later, Muftah deleted her Twitter account. The position on the UN Forum ultimately went to Patricia Hermanns of the Bahamas. Muftah also called Jews “our enemies” and said they “dominated, tyrannized, and ruled the world” because they “focused their investments in industry and the media.” Replying to a headline expressing former Vice President Dick Cheney’s excitement about his gay daughter’s wedding, she wrote that “the West celebrates the lack of reason… and the decay of morals.” And in response to the UN advocating for the rights of LGBTQ Africans, Muftah wrote, “Stay away from the Middle East and Arab countries, keep your rights for your people.” An adopted brother, a troubled boy named Mantosh, arrives a year or so later, and Saroo’s past in India begins to fade as his new life in Tasmania forges on. From there he’s sent to Tasmania, Australia, and adopted by a doting, childless white couple. The first half of Lion, harrowing and sad, depicts Saroo’s time alone on the streets, nearly preyed upon by sinister people with undoubtedly even more sinister motives, until he’s finally brought to an orphanage. The little boy with the big smile stole hearts when he appeared onstage with costar Dev Patel at the Golden Globes to introduce their nominated drama, Lion with a boost from Patel in order to. On an ill-fated train trip to look for work, Saroo and his older brother, Guddu, are separated, and Saroo ends up on a train that carries him 1,000 miles from home, to the busy jumble of Kolkata. Though his family lives in extreme poverty and Saroo is often. When he’s about four, he becomes responsible for his baby sister, Shekila. He admires his mother Kamla, and his older brothers Guddu and Kallu. The film begins in 1986 in Khandwa, India, where five-year-old Saroo Khan lives with his mother and siblings. The author and narrator of the book, Saroo was born Sheru in the central Indian town of Khandwa. Though Lion, which was directed by Top of the Lake helmer Garth Davis, gets a bit muddled in its second half, it’s altogether a robust and moving film, one that touches on a range of topics, from poverty to adoption to the insistent longing for a sense of place felt by, well, most human beings. The world seems both small and vast in Lion, a based-on-a-true-story drama that the Weinstein Company is pinning a lot of Oscar hopes on as it premieres here at the Toronto International Film Festival. Okuman Bocchi, the short story in the back of the volume for Hellstar Remina, is very strong, too. One of the strongest collection volumes would be Michi no Naimachi (The Town with No Streets), but Fragments of Horror (available in English) is also good! I'd stay away from Dissolving Classroom that is one of his weakest volumes of all. One of my very favorites is Shibito no Koiwazurai. I don't know how the fan translations are going of his highly prolific collection, but that may be the only way to access them unless you can read Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. I've read almost 100% of his works (not counting Rasputin, since he just did the art), and I'm sad to say that a lot of his best stories have yet to be officially translated. Born in Miramar, FL in 1989 to Haitian immigrants, Jason Desrouleaux got his start at performing arts schools and penning tracks for Diddy, Lil Wayne, and Danity Kane, among many others, while working on his own songs and routines. Jason Derulo’s story is a classic rags-to-riches saga about how hard work (and looks that’ll get you named as one of People’s Sexiest Men Alive) can pay off. With the Nike team working closely with Felix and her team of coaches and trainers, the cutting-edge running shoe was fit with a spike plate that was precisely developed to Felix’s specifications and biomechanics. The Nike Zoom Superfly Flyknit is the result of exhaustive scientific analysis from Nike’s Sports Research Lab, computational design from their designers and pixel-level stitch placement from Nike Flyknit engineers. The unprecedented collaboration brought together all of Nike’s design and engineering experience, combined it with Felix’ specific insight and needs to produce a new shoe, specifically the running spikes at the bottom, that will help propel her to another victory. Gold-medal-winning American sprinter Allyson Felix is hoping that a collaboration with Nike has produced the perfect set of running shoes to help her repeat her success in 2012. But a real test for runners is their ability to navigate the track’s curve, which is where most of these events are won and lost. The spikes dig into the ground, allowing the runner to push off slightly faster and have more control, while the reduced weight of the upper shoe offers drag-free movement. A recent trend is ultra-lightweight running shoes with spikes on the sole of the shoe. (REUTERS/Eddie Keogh)Īthletes who perform in the 200- and the 400-meter sprints often win by margins of milliseconds, so they are naturally going to look for any advantage that they can find to shave a few of them off of their running times.
